About the Centre

Where the Foundation's Work Began

Little Heart Care Center was established in 2013 by Dr. Pankaj Sugaonkar as a dedicated space for paediatric cardiology in Pune — somewhere a family could get a full diagnosis and, where needed, treatment, without being sent from department to department.

More than a decade on, it remains the Foundation's flagship centre: fetal and neonatal echocardiography, device closures, cardiac catheterisation and long-term follow-up, all delivered by the same specialist a child saw on their first visit.

It is also where the Foundation's outreach work is coordinated — the free camps across Maharashtra that bring children here for the treatment their families could not otherwise reach.

Finding Out Exactly What Is Going On

In paediatric cardiology, the diagnosis is most of the work.

Paediatric Echocardiography A painless ultrasound that shows how your child's heart is built and how it is working. The single most useful test in paediatric cardiology. Fetal Echocardiography A detailed scan of a baby's heart before birth, usually between 18 and 24 weeks of pregnancy. Neonatal Echocardiography Cot-side heart scanning for newborns and premature babies, including inside the NICU. Transesophageal Echo (TEE) Detailed imaging from directly behind the heart, used to plan and guide device closure. Cardiac CT & MRI Reporting Cross-sectional imaging for complex anatomy and surgical planning, reported by a paediatric cardiologist. Diagnostic Cardiac Catheterization Direct measurement of pressures inside the heart, and high-resolution angiography.

Fixing the Problem With the Smallest Intervention

Many defects that once needed open-heart surgery can now be corrected through a catheter.

ASD Device Closure Closing a hole between the upper chambers through a catheter, with no chest incision and a one-night stay. VSD Device Closure Transcatheter closure of a defect between the pumping chambers, where the anatomy allows it. PDA Device Closure Plugging a persistent ductus from inside — including in premature babies under a kilogram. Balloon Pulmonary Valvuloplasty Opening a narrowed pulmonary valve with a balloon. The treatment of choice at every age.

Common Questions

Before You Visit

Do I need a referral to book an appointment?
No. You can contact us directly. If your paediatrician has already given you a report, bring it along.
What should I bring to the first visit?
Any previous echo or ECG reports, discharge summaries, the list of medicines your child takes, and your child's birth details. If your child was born prematurely, bring the neonatal records.
How long does an echocardiogram take?
Usually 20 to 40 minutes. Small children are sometimes gently sedated so they stay still — we will tell you in advance if that is likely.
Will my child need surgery?
Many children do not. A large number of common defects can now be closed through a catheter without opening the chest. Dr. Pankaj Sugaonkar will explain the options after the scan.
Is this centre the same as the other one?
Both centres are run by Save Little Heart Foundation and offer the same services under Dr. Pankaj Sugaonkar. The only difference is location. Choose whichever is easier for you to reach.
